Kedah Coastal Extension

Kedah, Malaysia

The coastal extension project encompasses 40,000 acres of reclaimed land along a 100-kilometer long coastline of Kedah making it the single largest land reclamation in Malaysia and, by its sheer size, establishes a major economic and industrial shipping hub for the northern region. The master plan includes a deepwater harbor and container port which shall help and develop economic activities in the Indonesia-Malaysia-Thailand Growth Triangle (IMT-GT).

An international airport is proposed to provide a fully-integrated transshipment hub to the region. With its strategic location near air, rail, and sea routes, the project is programmed to be a prime destination for investments, major industries, and business corporations.

In parallel and to enhance the sustainable use of the islands, preservation and rejuvenation of Kedah’s waterfront will be a priority responsibility in the waterfront development.

The Master Plan involves the reclamation of 9 islands that are linked together by their economic functions while existing islands will be preserved as marine parks. The preservation will help in re-establishing mangroves and ecological habitats, maintain flood and irrigation controls, and eliminate coastal erosion problems.
